Ventures in Wisdom: Poems, Reflections, and the Roots of What We Know

I am not a perfect person. I should probably lead with that.I'm a naturopathic physician who spends his days reading lab results and feeling pulses and sitting across from people in the most honest moments of their lives. I'm also a poet. A father. A husband who once wrote a love poem about butter. And somewhere along the way... between the clinical charts and the bedtime stories and the long drives through Southern Oregon with the windows down...I started writing things down.Not because I had answers. But because the questions wouldn't leave me alone.Ventures in Wisdom is a collection of poems, prose essays, and reflections that grew out of many years of listening. Listening to patients. Listening to my grandmother. Listening to Frost and Gibran and the Zen masters and, on the best days, listening to the silence between the words where the real meaning tends to hide.The book is arranged in eight thematic groves...clusters of living ideas growing from shared roots:The Soil and the Seed: resilience as biology. A seed doesn't grow by staying intact. It grows by breaking open.The Fault Line: love as seismic event. Poems written by someone who chose to stay on shaky ground because the flat, nothing-ever-happens ground was worse.The Unseen Seam: paradox as home. The space where opposites touch and something unnamed is born between them.The Folly of Certainty: on the wisdom of the open hand. Holding a diagnosis in one hand and a question in the other, and keeping walking with both.The Dash: mortality, but warm. The little chiseled line between two dates on a granite stone that holds the weight of every breath you ever took.The Vertical Test: isolation as tuition. The specific loneliness of seeing deeply and the cost of carrying what you find back up.Domestic Light: the sacred in the ordinary. Two cups of coffee every morning. The way she folds clothes. The house at night when the kids are asleep and the dryer hums.Thread by Thread: connection, interdependence, and the bonds that never really break. The frayed thread is not the failed thread.Inside these groves you'll find a five-page elegy sitting next to a comedic ode about electronic medical records. A prose essay about holding a dying man's hand lives a few pages from a love poem about Scrabble with the kids. A retelling of Gibran's parable of the Wise King lives alongside a poem called "Pickle Party" about the chaos of hosting a dinner party unprepared. That's how life actually works. The sacred and the silly aren't separate categories. They share the same Tuesday.Every poem is paired with an original piece of artwork in my visual style... ink-and-watercolor illustrations set against deep cosmic backgrounds in glowing cyan and violet. The images aren't decorations. They are companions. Each one was created to say the thing the words couldn't quite reach.And hidden between the poems, on the quiet pages where most books leave nothing... there is writing woven into the architecture of the book itself. I'll let you find it.I wrote most of these pieces in the margins of a full life. Some were scribbled between patient visits. Some arrived at 3 a.m. when the house was quiet and something needed to be said before it disappeared. A few were born from grief. A few from laughter. One was written entirely because I needed to vent about medical records in iambic pentameter.This book was written for the kind of person who reads alot of Rumi but still laughs at a good pun. For the person who has been broken open at least once and suspects...that the breaking was part of the design.
